Dental student attendance
Consistent student attendance demonstrates the necessary commitment to education and future profession
Regular participation in the programme ensures students are fully prepared to meet the GDC learning outcomes for registration. Absences can hinder progression and, in some instances, represent a lack of professionalism.
Each school will establish different attendance thresholds for warnings and consequences, which will vary by activity. For example, there will be more severe consequences for non-attendance where patient care is immediately impacted.
Students should note that:
- Each school will have specific rules and consequences related to authorised and unauthorised absences.
- Critical activities including clinical placements will have higher attendance expectations due to their direct impact on patient care and professional practice.
- Poor attendance can hinder your ability to progress and will likely result in consequences that can be serious. For example, the GDC guidance on Student Fitness to Practise includes repeated non-attendance as an example of an issue of concern in relation to the principle: ‘maintain, develop and work within your professional knowledge and skills’ (p.9, ‘Student Professionalism and Fitness to Practise‘, GDC).
- Schools strongly encourage students to aim for 100% attendance. Attending all sessions will best prepare students for their future career as a dental professional.
- Where possible planned arrangements may be made for personal circumstances including disability, religious commitments and caring responsibilities, ensuring necessary support is available when genuinely needed, according to school policy. Students are advised to contact their school support team to ensure that any needs and possible adjustments can be considered well in advance. However, students need to be aware that lost time cannot necessarily be given back and therefore can have an impact on progression.
Dental schools thank students for their dedication to their education and future profession.
