Dental Schools Council welcomes NHS 10 Year Health Plan

The Dental Schools Council welcomes the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan and its focus on preventative care.

Dr Katie Petty-Saphon, Chief Executive of the Dental Schools Council said,

“Preventative measures are essential for addressing the current challenges in accessing dental care, and we are encouraged by proposals that aim to strengthen the role of the wider dental team and expand community-based care. Oral healthcare professionals, who engage with patients regularly, are ideally positioned to lead the prevention agenda and contribute more broadly to general health.

“We have long advocated for the full utilisation of dental therapists, and it is reassuring to see the Government recognising the value of this approach. As key contributors to dental education and workforce development, dental schools are committed to supporting lifelong learning within NHS careers and ensuring that UK oral healthcare is well-equipped to meet the nation’s needs.

“Dental schools are also investing in innovative practices and technological advancements in oral healthcare delivery. The expansion of community care spaces presents excellent opportunities for both enhanced learning environments and improved patient outcomes. We are dedicated to ensuring that dentistry careers are accessible to all individuals with potential, regardless of background, and are actively working with dental schools to strengthen our efforts in widening participation.
